Dozens of people, trapped in a restricted area, were left defenseless inside the Citadelle La Ferrière, at least 12 deaths have been reported, including schoolchildren

The Citadelle La Ferrière, also known as the Citadelle Henri Christophe, is a colossal early 19th-century fortress located near Milot, in northern Haiti. Built between 1805 and 1820 under King Henri Christophe to defend Haitian independence, it is the largest fortress in the Americas.

A tourist visit turned into a tragedy on Saturday, April 11, 2026, when widespread panic and violence erupted inside the Citadelle La Ferrière, in the commune of Milot (North Department). Dozens of people, trapped in a restricted area, were left defenseless.

According to initial reports, the tragedy occurred as visitors, including several school groups, were exploring this historical monument of great national significance. Witnesses described a sudden phenomenon, such as a strong gust of wind or a sudden movement, which triggered panic.

Those present, particularly the young people, ran towards the exits. In the confusion and the crush, several people fell and were trampled, creating a horrific scene inside the Citadel. The provisional death toll is already high: at least 12 people have died and several others have been injured.

Among the victims are students from the town of Saint-Raphaël. The initial report indicates at least four deaths in this group, as well as several injuries. Rescue workers are continuing their investigations to assess the full extent of the tragedy.
