The US President Donald Trump warned Iran on Saturday that it had 48 hours left to meet the deadline he set for reaching an agreement, or he would attack its energy facilities.

"Remember when I gave Iran 10 days to make a deal or reopen the Strait of Hormuz? Time is running out: 48 hours before it's chaos. Praise God!" Trump wrote on his social media account, Truth Social.

Situation and consequences of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz

The president extended the deadline to Iran a few days ago, until April 6 at 8:00 PM Washington time (midnight GMT on April 7). The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil passes, has been one of the most destabilizing consequences of the war in the Middle East, which began on February 28 following the American and Israeli bombings of Tehran.

Trump promised that if Iran did not resolve the situation by the deadline, he would destroy its power plants. Although the president was already questioned at the time about the possibility of another extension of the deadline and did not rule it out, his message last Saturday hinted at a deadline.

However, last Friday, he posted a message alluding to "a little more time."

"With a little more time, we could easily open the Strait of Hormuz, seize the oil, and amass a fortune. Wouldn't that be a gold mine for the world?" he said.

Meanwhile, the US president promised a few days ago to attack Iran "hard" in the next two or three weeks.

Last Wednesday, Trump addressed the nation in a message that provided no concrete details for ending the war, nor any strategy for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
