THE GOVERNMENT IS COMMITTING MORE THAN A BILLION GOURDES TO SUPPORT THE POPULATION AT THE END OF THE YEAR, THE PRIMATURE ANNOUNCED IN A PRESS RELEASE THIS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2024.
Port-au-Prince, December 22, 2024 – Faced with the persistent security and health crisis, the government of the Republic is launching a Special Program to support the population. This program aims to meet the essential needs of the most vulnerable households, encourage economic recovery and strengthen social cohesion.
With a budget of more than a billion gourdes, this plan, supported by several ministries and public institutions, adopts a coordinated and targeted approach to meet the priority needs of the population while promoting the national economy.
An Inclusive and Priority-Focused Approach
1. Assistance to Households in Precarious Situations:
•Distribution of food kits and monetary transfers to the most affected households, with priority given to the elderly, people with disabilities and female heads of household. These actions are carried out under the coordination of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor (MAST) and the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES).
•Establishment of mobile canteens and community restaurants to provide hot meals in several localities.
2. Sanitation and Urban Infrastructure:
•Launch of a vast sanitation program, led by the Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Communities (MICT), in collaboration with town halls, CASECs and large municipalities, to clean urban areas and collect waste.
•Labour-intensive public works (HIMO) for the temporary rehabilitation of strategic roads, in particular those linking Port-au-Prince, Cap-Haitien, Les Cayes and Saint-Michel-de-l’Attalaye.
3. Strengthening Security and Logistics:
•Establishment of security measures by the army and the national police to protect strategic areas, streamline the movement of essential goods and guarantee orderly distribution of petroleum products in ports and airports.
4. Support for the Energy and Agricultural Sectors:
•Temporary increase in electricity production and distribution by the State Electricity of Haiti (EDH) to improve access to electricity during this critical period.
•Targeted support for rural associations and agricultural initiatives, under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR).
Concrete Effects on the Local Economy
This program aims to stimulate the national economy through direct payments, public initiatives and targeted subsidies. By injecting financial resources throughout the country, it aims to alleviate household difficulties while temporarily supporting economic activity.
Strengthening Health and Social Capacity
The Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) is intensifying its efforts to improve the operational capacities of hospitals and health centers, in order to manage increased medical needs. These measures are part of a global approach to protection and support for the population.
A Call for National Solidarity
The government is calling for collective mobilization – public institutions, private sector and civil society – to guarantee the success of this program. Through these initiatives, the State reaffirms its commitment to supporting citizens in vulnerable situations and to promoting a climate of collective resilience.
