Immigration: 33 Haitians Arrested While Attempting to Cross a Military Checkpoint in the Dominican Republic

Last Thursday, the Dominican Immigration Department announced the deportation of nearly 100,000 Haitian nationals during the first three months of the year.

The Dominican Republic Army (ERD) announced on Sunday the apprehension of 33 Haitian nationals residing illegally in the country during an operation conducted in the province of Dajabón.


The operation was carried out by an ERD patrol stationed at the El Rodeo checkpoint, following operations conducted in the area, the ERD stated in a press release.

According to the report, the foreigners were attempting to cross the aforementioned checkpoint when they were intercepted by military authorities.

 Last Thursday, the General Directorate of Migration announced the deportation of 99,268 undocumented Haitians during the first quarter of 2016.

The group included 29 men, four women, and one minor. The detainees were transferred under military guard to the headquarters of the Dominican Army's 10th Infantry Battalion (ERD), and then handed over to the General Directorate of Migration (DGM), in accordance with applicable legislation, the report concludes.
