Tensions Rise in Port-au-Prince Days After Fuel Price Hike

Tensions were observed this Monday, April 6, in Delmas 33, where bus drivers launched a protest against the fuel price hike announced by the Haitian government.

The situation is very tense in the Delmas 32 and 33 areas, particularly near the National Television of Haiti (TNH) building, where burning tires and minibuses placed across the road were observed.

Early in the morning, tires were set ablaze on the road, especially near the National Television of Haiti building, while several buses were placed across the road to block traffic. This mobilization quickly disrupted traffic in the area.

These disruptions are significantly affecting traffic and paralyzing many activities in the area. Calls are also being made to the authorities to reconsider the decision regarding the fuel price increase.

Speaking to reporters, drivers denounced a decision they deemed untenable, especially given the ever-increasing cost of living.

According to a notice issued by the Haitian government on May 30, 2026, fuel prices at the pump are now set at 725 gourdes for gasoline, 850 gourdes for diesel, and 845 gourdes for kerosene.

This decision by the authorities comes amid a tense international context, marked by disruptions in the global oil market linked to the conflict in the Middle East, particularly following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian authorities.

This strait is indeed one of the main maritime waterways for oil transport, supplying a significant portion of the global market.
